"See Naples before you die" (you must not die without seeing Naples).
One of the reasons why it is said is that the view from Mount Vesuvius is the best in the world.
So, I have compiled a list of how to get to Mount Vesuvius in Naples, Italy, as well as prices, times, and other information.
This is the route I used, so there may be others, but please use it as a reference for sightseeing in Naples!
Go to Mt. Vesuvius by bus
3ways
- Walk from the foot of the mountain🚶♀️
- Bus to the halfway point → walk🚶♀️
- Cab to the halfway point → walk🚶♀️
Basically, you will have to choose one of these three ways.
Until the great eruption of 1943, there was a cable car in operation, so you could use that, but there is no prospect of its restoration, so you will have to go there by yourself.
I took the bus to get there, so I'll show you how to get there by bus. I think this is the easiest way!
By the way, it takes about 4 hours to walk from the foot of the mountain.
If you take a bus, it takes 30 minutes by bus and 1 hour walking from there to the top.
Leave from "Ercolano Scavi station" by bus
Bus shuttles are available from the "Ercolano Scavi" train station.
"Ercolano Scavi station" is located about 20 minutes by train from "Naples Central Station"
You can buy the combined "shuttle bus fare" and "entrance fee" at the ticket store around this station!
Buy the bus and entrance ticket here!
Here is the store I used.
I was served by two extremely affable ladies! They both seemed to speak no English at all, so you might want to learn at least how to say the numbers in Italian to make it go smoothly!
There is another ticket store in the same area, but the cost is the same for both.
We took the same bus as the people who bought tickets there, so you can go to either store.
26€(Bus fee & Entrance fee)
- Bus fare (round trip) = 15 euros
- Entrance fee = 10 euros
- Naples city tax = 1 euro
This is the gee Breakdown.
Fees are per person.
The paper you get at the ticket store is required when entering the mountain!
Before boarding the bus, you will be given a piece of paper with a bar code on it.
This will be your barcode to enter the mountain, so do not lose it.
The stickers that are put on the buses are also important!
Also, when I boarded the bus, I was given a sticker like the one in the picture.
When you get on the bus on the way back, this sticker is like proof that you can use the bus, so be careful not to remove it on the way too!
The bus will get you there in roughly 30 minutes!
Prepare food and drink before taking a bus
There is a ticket store right in front of the station, and if you walk down the hill a bit from the station, you will find a variety of stores.
There are also three rest stops along the trail where you can buy drinks, meals, and souvenirs, but they are naturally rather expensive.
Bottled water costs 1.5 euros there. (0.5 euros around the train station).
Better be prepared before you get on the bus!
Finally got to the Mountain!
Here are some pictures of my actual climb!
You'll want to try it!
How beautiful!
道中の景色はずっと「絶景」。
The scenery along the way is "spectacular" all the way and it changes little by little as we go up the mountain, circling around the edge of the mountain.
To be honest, the safety measures are not so good, so there are many places where you might think "Isn't this dangerous?"
But anyway, the view is amazing!
You can see all the way to the bottom of the crater
Its "crater," which has erupted many times in the past, is in full view.
The eruption was so huge that the city of "Pompeii" disappeared in an instant. (Pompeii is registered as a World Heritage site and can be explored.)
It was quite chilling because we could see the rock walls and cinder cones in the crater quite clearly.
Cafe or souvenir shop
Maybe three places in total before the summit.
There are three rest small houses on the way to the summit, where you can buy souvenirs made of volcanic ash, light meals, and drinks.
Mountaineering Hacks~Preparation for comfortable mountaineering!
Even though the altitude is not that high, it is still "mountain climbing.
Preparation and measures in advance will make it much more enjoyable and easier.
point
- Morning is the best time to visit
- Sneakers required
- Minimal luggage
You should go at 9 am
Vesuvius opens at "9:00".
I believe the first shuttle buses leave accordingly.
The reason for going at the same time as the volcano opens is to "protect against the heat" and "avoid the crowds."
There are quite a lot of tour groups as well as children on school excursions, and the number of them increases tremendously one after another after 10:00.
The spots where you can see the crater and rest areas get more and more crowded as time goes by, so you can't relax much and it becomes less and less busy!
This one is definitely best first thing in the morning!
Rough road all the way
The road is quite wide, but the ground is "gravel" all the way.
The road turns to dirt in the middle, but the highest part of the slope is gravel.
It's quite a drag on the feet and fatigue sets in.
It is definitely a place where you need to come in comfortable shoes. (Or else you will get hurt.)
The cafe at the top is the Best
There are about 3 rest small houses along the way, but I recommend the top one!
Do not stop at other cafes because it is getting crowded as time goes by.
It is the most spectacular view and resting spot.
However, this is where all the climbers hang out, so it is very crowded.
If you enter the mountain first thing in the morning and are able to be among the first to climb, you can take your time at the very top while enjoying the view and looking at the crater!
Must go to "Pompei"
There is a city that was obliterated by a pyroclastic flow from the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano.
It is called "Pompeii" and is now registered as one of the World Heritage Sites.
If you have climbed Vesuvius, it is recommended to look up Vesuvius from Pompeii.
If you climb Vesuvius in the morning, you can walk around Pompeii directly after descending from the mountain! (*Pompeii is quite large. It is very hard to climb the mountain and walk around Pompeii. Be prepared to lose your stamina!)
Personally, this is the most impressive spot in Naples.
